The role of human factors in understanding and modelling driver performance is now widely recognised as an essential step in the design and positioning of lineside signals and objects in order to support safe driving behaviours and prevent SPADs. This paper provides a brief overview of four extensive research projects that are investigating the capabilities and limitations of driver performance and generating data that are being applied to the reduction of SPADs in the UK. Each project is being conducted by Human Engineering in conjunction with Network Rail and/or RSSB (the Rail Safety and Standards Board).
