Dr Bin ZhuPrincipal Commissioning Manager Hitachi Rail STS Gianluigi LauroSenior Innovation Engineer Hitachi Rail STS Federico NardiSenior Director Technology Management Hitachi Rail STS In this paper, we would like to introduce an innovative proposal based on the research conducted by the Hitachi Rail Innovation team to further improve the existing available tablet application, particularly for the handheld driver terminal (HDT), which relies on a single source of GPS for locations. A novel on-board train position system has been researched by Hitachi Rail through its VOLIERA (Video Odometry with LIDAR and EGNSS for ERTMS Applications) project [8] which aims to develop an innovative train positioning system based on the fusion of measurement data from different sensors and technologies), a project conducted in Italy. In the proposed on-board train positioning system, GPS data is combined with that provided by an inertial measurement unit (IMU), LiDAR, Depth and Stereo-Camera which work as multiplesources to enhance accuracy and the reliability of odometer information. The provision of the more precise location information like distance-to-LoA, means it can help improve the performance of the on-board signalling thus resulting in an increase in the capacity and flexibility of railway lines. |
