The signalling of single passenger lines where the traffic is light and therefore the revenue is low presents certain problems that are not always so evident on busier lines.
The signalling arrangements must give adequate protection for the train movements but the cost of installation must be kept as low as practicable and minor troubles should be within the capacity of the operating staff to overcome.
The maintenance of the signalling arrangements should also be as low as possible without sacrificing safety.
The signalling should be designed especially with a view to economical operation.
All the problems that I have mentioned are common to signalling generally but they assume larger proportions on the lines with small revenue.
