199203 – Craig – Melbourne’s Automatic Tram & Bus Vehicle Monitoring System: Technical Aspects of System Development & Maintenance

The staged installation and commissioning of an Automatic Vehicle Monitoring (AVM) System to 280 buses and 180 trams was completed in 1987 as a “Turn-Key” Project.

This paper provides an overview of the system architecture followed by a discussion of the “As Delivered” technical limitations, maintenance and system software wrt aspects, and the implementation of subsequent in-house system developments undertaken to enhance the effective reliability and utilisation of the system capabilities.
