What is quality? There are many definitions, some defined from a contractors view, some from a clients and others from a global perspective. All are basically saying the same thing: A product or service suited to ifs application which provides satisfaction to the user. And who is the user? The user is everybody in the cycle from design, raw material, fabrication, marketing/sales through to the consumer. Each element of this cycle is providing a product or service to the next element, this product or service should have quality built into it from the start. A product suited to its application may be a safe product, a reliable product, easy to use and robust. In terms of intermediate production stages, it may be properly toleranced parts easily assembled into units. A product providing satisfaction to the user may be easy to use, reliable and competitively priced. But doesn’t everybody do this already? Sadly no. Some think they do but are unable to measure it, provide any proof its there or demonstrate quality. This paper will show how quality strategies have been applied to the AUSTRAC project within Australian National to ensure quality is built-in right fro111 the start, that it is measurable, and demonstrable with documented proof.
