In May 1991 Queensland Rail awarded ABB Signal (formerly EB Signals) a contract for design, supply and installation of a signalling system on the North Coast main line between Farleigh to Purono (Mackay-Townsville).

The project is part of Queensland Rail’s modernisation strategy of its network and the introduction of driver only trains outside the electrified area

Queensland Rail will also equip the line with ATP, this being executed under a separate contract with WBS.

The new signalling system is at some stations replacing some 20 – 30 year old equipment consisting of semaphores and mechanical leavers; at other stations, no protection existed at all before.

The whole line will be remotely controlled from Townsville CTC centre, however all work associated with the CTC centre will be carried out by Queensland Rail.
