Typically, the integration of the Signalling System, Platform Screen Door PSD, Tunnel Ventilation System TVS, Automatic Train Operation ATO, SCADA and other particular equipment, which interact with Signalling in and around the Tunnel, create new requirements to be allocated to innovative signalling systems like ETCS or CBTC.

The strong integration of the signalling with other subsystems is the result of the following activities:

  • Requirements management to comply with V&V processes using consolidated tools
  • Interface management using consolidated tools
  • Accurately defining degraded and emergency scenarios where a well-integrated system can improve the safety
  • Execution of integrated lab-tests using simulators of external systems to pre-test interfaces and scenarios in a simulated environment with real software
  • Execution of integrated tests in the field to validate requirements and scenarios.

The paper explains the process to define the Tunnel System architecture and integration of different subsystems to improve overall system performance and safety.

Examples are presented in the paper that freely share lessons learned and best practices:

  • Ventilation Strategy Implementation and Evacuation management (with different Safety SIL levels): Riyadh Metro, Rome Line C, Thessaloniki Metro
  • Flood Gates Management: Cityringen Metro / Chengdu Line
  • Automatic management of the Line Electrification cut-off with different SIL levels: Taipei, Bruxelles
  • Intrusion Detection Management at tunnel entry (with advanced CCTV imagine elaboration)
  • Wayside-based Automatic Diagnostic Portal for an advanced vehicle diagnostic for a safety entry in tunnel: Milan Metro Line5
  • SPVI System: Integrated supervision and security management of the Tunnel>1 km length in the Italian Railway: management of a 37 km length Tunnel on the Milan - Genoa ETCS L2 line (coordination of all the involved systems as CCTV, Intrusion Detection, Traction Power, Ventilation…)
  • Cross River Rail: Focus on tunnel signalling architecture including ETCS, TVS, ATO and PSD
