Technical Meeting Paper
195810 – Wooley, Irving & Clayton – Installation of CTC Signalling: Eastmalvern to Glen Waverley
As previously stated, the C.T.C off ice and field equipment was supplied by the Contractors already assembled and pre-wired into the various housings. The Departmental portion of the installation consisted of:
(a) The power supply and its supervisory switching of alternative power sources.
(b) The fixing and external wiring of the office control panel and its associated coding and storage unit.
(c) The wayside signals and track equipment.
(d) The field equipment and housings.
(e) The Signal trunking and cables.
(f) The overhaul, adjustment and testing of the equipment. Although not carried out in that chronological order.
I propose to deal with the installation as thus summarised. Having regard to the supply by contract of much of the equipment, the remainder was scheduled in various groups a3 required on specified dates, having in view a definite program and date of completion.
However, since this was the first installation of its type, it was subsequently decided to combine with the trail set up and testing of the equipment on its delivery by the Contractor, an extensive
demonstration of its operation and principles to as many of the maintenance staff as possible. This caused a delay of the arrival of the Contract equipment into the field and a consequent postponement of the date of bringing into service. Of this I was grateful, since we as Construction staff, having no precedent to guide US, had rather underestimated the difficulties which we were to encounter.
