The aim of this paper is to describe briefly the signalling and C.T.C. systems recently commissioned between Sunshine and Rockbank, which incorporated several features new to the Victorian Railways Commission, these being :-
– The use of C.S.E.E. type jointless Track Circuit Equipment.
– Distribution of mains power at 650 volts.
– The responsibility for the setting to work and complete testing of the sys tern by the Contractor.
– The carrying out of the work by the award of a series of separate contracts, as against one contract for the complete works.
Sunshine is located approximately 7 miles to the West of Melbourne, and the Signal Box controls the junction of the main Western line to Adelaide via Ballarat, and the North Western line to Bendigo (see Figure 1). This Signal Box also controls by direct wire a relay interlocking at Albion which is the junction of the Bendigo and Broadmeadows lines. The route from St. Albans through Sunshine, via Tottenham to Melbourne, is electrified at 1500 V,D.C, as a part of the Melbourne Suburban System.
Rockbank lies approximately 10 miles to the West of Sunshine on the single line to Ballarat.
