The standard gauge line was brought into use in 1967 basically to haul iron ore from Koolyanobbing. Rail installed is 47Kg on timber sleepers and due to heavy traffic it is now necessary to upgrade to 60Kg on concrete sleepers. Long high voltage pulse track circuits with reed overlay jointless for level crossing protection are to be installed to reduce equipment and insulated joints requirement.

A temporary axle counter system is also being provided to maintain reliability of that portion of the signal system having re-railing operations in course. Various extentions and alterations to signalling is associated with the works including connections to concrete sleeper plant, extensions to crossing loops and track alterations and provision for dual gauge entering into Forrestfield. Project commenced in September 1978 and is to complete by the end of 1983. Signal and Communications content is in excess of $5 million in the total scheme cost of $70 million.
