Following a period of at least 12 months experience as a Signal Electrician Grade II a tradesman can apply to attend a course for Signal Electrician Grade I, This course, also of three weeks duration, teaches the more complex signalling procedures and maintenance requirements. An examination is held at the end of this course which qualifies successful candidates for positions as Signal Electrician Grade I. Section electricians in Q.R. must be qualified in this grade.
The courses have mainly been conducted by the Signalling Inspector with a number of engineers giving lectures on specific subjects. The courses have been reasonably successful but with the advance of technology are now somewhat out of date. A review of the instruction manuals and the method of conducting classes is now being carried out.
