As part of the main line electrification project a brief visit to the Railway systems and suppliers in South Africa, Finland, and Canada was undertaken in September 1984.
The purpose of the visit was to examine and evaluate:-
– The telecommunication aspects of axle counting systems
– U.H.F. train radio systems
– Digital microwave radio systems
– Drop and Insert PCM systems for optical fibre and radio based systems
– Point-to-multipoint (rural) radio systems, and
– End of train monitors.
