199007 – Whisson & Nikandros – Signalling for Driver Only Operation in Queensland Railways

Whilst it appeared certain that the introduction of Driver Only Operation (D.O.O.) would have a significant impact on the commercial operations of Q.R. it did not appear at first that the provision of signalling and safeworking systems would be such a huge task, particularly in comparison with the massive signalling task which had just been completed for Main Line Electrification.

However, early in the development of the project it became clear the application of newly emergent technologies could provide new challenges and opportunities to improve the systems which were already in place.

This paper outlines some of the background to the provision of safeworking facilities for D.O.O., and the status of current developments.
