This paper describes the Trans Australian Railway Communications System, which provides the backbone infrastructure for the Austrac Train Control System, as well as mobile voice communications and wayside communications requirements. The system is based on optical fibre transmission, and covers a 1700 km track through some of the most remote areas of Australia. Most of the system is solar powered.
