This is one of two (2) papers on the Metropolitan Train Radio System which will be presented in the convention. It gives a Public Transport Corporation (PTC) perspective on the use of Electronic Communications, particularly, radio, in a modern mass transit system. The other paper will be presented by PTC’s contractor, Motorola Communications and its sub-contractor, Westinghouse Brake and Signals, covering the trunking radio infrastructure and the computer control interface systems, respectively.
In this paper, the following aspects of the radio system will be discussed;
1) Phases of development in radio use.
2) Trunking Radio project, system specifications, selection of options and scope variations.
3) System enhancement to cover usage other than train operation.
4) Impact on Train Control (Metrol) room operation.
