The growth of Bangkok, both physically and economically in the last 10 years, has been phenomenal. Many consider Thailand to be the 5th Little Tiger of Asia, after Big Tiger Japan and Little Tigers Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, but greater economic growth also requires greater transportation infrastructures. Bangkok’s traffic conditions, not unlike that of the other large cities, have steadily been worsening.
Unless these traffic problems are resolved, further growth potentials of Bangkok will be severely hampered, because the city will be choked to a crawling pace.
Bangkok is not alone in seeking a solution to this problem. Other Asian cities, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, have addressed the problem by constructing new road networks and modern mass transit railway systems.
