Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co. (Australia) Ltd. are engaged in a major renewal of the signalling of a section of the Royal State Railway of Thailand (RSR) Central Mainline, including the provision of a Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) system. The design and development of the CTC is the particular task of the Control Systems group within the Signal and Communications Department of Westinghouse.

The CTC controlled area runs from Bang Khen to Lop Buri, inclusive, with a further area from Bangkok to Bang Sue being indication only. The total route distance is approximately 150 kilometres and 23 stations are controlled with a further 3 being indication only.

The CTC provides control and supervision of remote signalling equipment, train describer facilities and telephone communication for the areas:

i) Bangkok to Bang Sue inclusive, known as Area 1 (3 stations). Indications only are provided for this area.
ii) Bang Sue exclusive to Lop Buri inclusive, known as Area 2 (21 Stations). Full CTC control and indication is provided for this area.
iii) Bang Sue exclusive to Taling Chan Junction inclusive, known as Area 3, (2 Stations). Full CTC control and indication is provided for this area.

The Control Systems group are providing four major items, as well as other RSR requirements such as training:-

i) CTC Office including a Train Describer, acting as interface to the operators and to the telemetry.
ii) Telemetry, providing transmission/reception of controls and indications to/from remote interlockings.
iii) Telephone communications equipment, providing the operators with direct voice communication to remote stations.
iv) Inter Block Telemetry equipment, providing non-vital data communication between adjacent remote relay interlockings.

Whilst each of the above subjects will be discussed and expanded upon in turn in this paper, it is to be noted that only a brief outline of the CTC system can be given.
