The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the reorganisation of Queensland Rail and to review the introduction of new signalling equipment and Automatic Train Protection for Driver Only Operation.
This paper covers the following topics:
– the changes to Queensland Rail (QR) as an organisation,
– the introduction of new signalling technologies, and
– the challenges faced in implementing the new technologies.
During the implementation of signalling systems for Driver Only Operation the structure of Queensland Rail has been significantly changed due to the reorganisation of Queensland Rail into product orientated business groups.
The implementation of signalling for driver only operation has provided QR with the opportunity to signal a large section of the North Coast Line. The availability of new signalling technologies has allowed QR to install the most cost effective and modern signalling system possible given the safety constraints necessary for a modern railway.
The signalling systems installed and signalling related problems faced by Queensland Rail during the introduction of the signalling for Driver Only Operation are discussed.
