There are significant changes taking place in Australia in the regulation of rail safety on a national basis. This paper will give an overview of the current status of these changes and discuss the implications for signal engineering. The changes open up opportunities for the development of a more coordinated approach to the design of signal systems with potential benefits in reduced costs and greater competitiveness for the rail industry.
