As a central component of the Auckland rail electrification project, a purpose-built rail depot was required to house and maintain Auckland’s 57 new Electric Multiple Units (EMUs),

This paper will introduce the project, its objectives and the design and construction partners who together created an award-winning, world class rail depot located in Wiri, South Auckland.

The paper will provide insight into the choice of location, urban design, form and functionality with a focus on safety, lighting and cultural features.

Key components of the depot will be described in detail including material selection, rail specific features, earthing and bonding, safety & security and sustainability.

The final focus of the paper describes the rail depot’s future proofing philosophy and features.
