201410 – Major – Auckland’s EMU – An Overview

The contract for the supply of fifty seven (57) three car EMUs was signed in September 2011 by CAF and AT and required the first set to be in Auckland by September 2013, with the fifty seventh set by the end of 2015. This was a very demanding program for the procurement of any rolling stock and especially so given the vehicles uniqueness and the dreaded time and distance remoteness of New Zealand.

The first EMU set was delivered in August 2013 and deliveries have continued to be on program.

This paper sets out to provide background information on the rolling stock procurement project together with an outline on the technical features of the EMUs and the processes deployed by the project.
